Asif Zardari front man admits 300 acres was Amanat of my friend

Has finally come forward to make some candid confessions, on the record, admitting that the land was an “amanat” (trust) of Mr Zardari and in 2004-05 when he was almost dying of sickness, he had asked Mr Zardari “to get this land off my name.”
The six-foot tall, healthy looking, pony-tailed Mohammad Nasir Khan, sat down with The News team in a five-star hotel in Karachi a fortnight back to discuss the entire land episode and spoke frankly, mostly off the record, but allowed some portions of his interview to be printed. He did not use Mr Zardari’s name in his talk but always referred to him as “my friend”. But several times when he was asked whether by “my friend” he meant President Zardari, his answer was always ‘yes’.
It was clear from his long conversation that he knew little about the manner in which the land was transferred to another friend of Mr Zardari, Faisal Sakhi Butt, for just Rs62 million. But Nasir Khan owned up everything that had been done in the courts, including a case filed by Faisal Butt against him and later transfer of the court decree in the name of Park Lane Estates (Pvt) Ltd, owned by Mr Zardari and his son.
What emerged clearly after talking to Nasir Khan was that the court proceedings invoked in the controversial transfer of 2,460 kanals of Islamabad land early this year were just a cover up to give legal shape to what was already settled and sealed between the concerned parties.
The interview with Nasir Khan was possible after a wild goose chase for him by the entire investigation team of The News, including his contacts and addresses in the United States and digging out his CNIC record from Nadra because there were strong rumours that he had died several years ago.
In the interview Nasir Khan himself confirmed that even a police team arrived at his house in Karachi recently to check whether he was alive or dead. Who and why the police team was sent could not been explained.
Background interactions, documentary evidence and the interview with the most important player of this deal make the case far more suspicious than what it was considered earlier, as the middle link, Faisal Sakhi Butt, has mysteriously gone underground and is totally inaccessible to the media, refusing to even show his face for a picture from a zoom lens.
Butt, who had bought the land from Nasir Khan using the legal process to transfer it to Mr Zardari, was brought in the picture after Nasir Khan had sent the secret message to Mr Zardari, who had probably left Pakistan by then. Interestingly neither any evidence was produced in the court of any legally acknowledged transaction in this sale-purchase deal nor any other source including the seller, Nasir Khan, could show anything in this regard.
When Nasir Khan was asked repeatedly in the interview how the money had been transferred and through which account, he sought refuge behind the argument that all financial matters were “private and confidential” and could not be discussed.
Nasir Khan made some revealing disclosures and his dates and time line for several developments in the deal make the entire transaction more than shady.
What makes Faisal Sakhi Butt a totally irrelevant actor in this whole case was the admission of Nasir Khan that he had sold the land in 2003 and had in 2004-2005 requested his friend (Asif Ali Zardari) to “get it (the land) off my name.”
Mr Khan said that it was only after this demand that the land should be transferred from his name, that the court procedure was pursued. “Whatever happened in court was with my consent,” he said giving blanket approval of the legal shuffling that was done, but his dates and time left many questions unanswered.
Faisal Sakhi Butt, it was thus established, had knocked the door of the courts only to ensure the smooth transfer of land from Nasir Khan to President Zardari’s company called M/s Park Lane Estates (Pvt) Ltd.
The court papers show that the case, filed by Butt, was never contested by Nasir Khan, who admitted to The News that all that had happened after 2003 was with his consent.
But mystery was added when he was asked about the case, names of lawyers etc and he knew no one. He neither knew the name of the counsel, who represented him in the Islamabad courts in this case, nor did he remember the date and even month of the sale agreement.
Nasir Khan also could not recall the price for which he sold the land but repeatedly said that whatever was reflected in the “sale agreement” as produced before the court was correct.
When further probed as to how much money did he get from Mr Zardari in 2003 for this land, he declined to share details, arguing that payment issues were personal issues and could not be disclosed in public.
Nasir Khan met with a team of The News in a restaurant of a leading Karachi hotel, where Mr Khan was invited for the meeting. Humble but smart Khan was extremely cautious about the words he chose and was too choosy and careful as to where would he be quoted on the record. His foremost concern was not to say anything that might hurt ‘his friend’.
He revealed that a number of Karachi policemen visited his home recently to inquire if he is dead. Why and who sent them he did not disclose.
Khan insisted that the land was his and not of Mr Asif Ali Zardari when he bought it in mid 90s. Around 2003, he said, he was badly in need of money so he contacted his friend (Mr Zardari), who, he recalled, had promised him at the time of the purchase of the land that he (AZ) would pay or get some one pay double the amount for the land whenever he would need the money.
In return, he said that some payment was made to him. “How did he (Mr Zardari) arrange that, I don’t know,” Khan said perhaps realising that Mr Zardari was in jail in the year 2003.
“And then when I got ill in 2004-05 and was close to death, I sent him (Mr Zardari) a message to get it (the land) off my name,” he said, adding that this was how the court process started. “Whatever happened in the court was with my consent,” he admitted and owned up every document produced before the courts.
However, he knew nothing about what was written in the sale agreement or in the court papers. The sale agreement as was produced before the Islamabad court, and signed by Nasir Khan and Faisal Sakhi Butt, in the very beginning says that it was made on January 18, 2007. Mr Khan, however, did not remember the date or the month.
When pressed to recall, he said that it was perhaps signed a week or so before the murder of Benazir Bhutto. The former prime minister was assassinated on Dec 27, 2007. He was thus off the mark by about a year.
When asked about the amount for which the land was sold and as mentioned in the agreement, he said that he did not remember what amount did he receive but hurriedly added, “The amount is mentioned in the agreement.” He said, “Whatever is in the agreement is correct.”
Every page of the three-page agreement has the signatures of both Khan and Butt. The agreement is also annexed with a “Receipt” that is signed by Nasir Khan on January 18, 2007 and confirms the receipt of a sum of US $15,000 from Faisal Butt as “advance payment in connection with the sale of 2460 kanals and 17 marlas of land at Sangjani, Islamabad for a total sale consideration of Rs62,000,000 (Rs62 m) only.”
There is no mention if the said payment was made through bank. In US such transactions in cash are not permitted. Nasir Khan could land in serious trouble if he did not disclose the transaction in his US tax returns or other financial papers.
When asked about this Nasir Khan said that he would not discuss and disclose such financial issues, as they were personal matters.
Asked to tell the name of the counsel that he had hired to represent him in the Islamabad courts in the civil suit that Faisal Butt had filed against him, he said that he did not remember his name.
Nasir Khan had neither appeared in person before the civil court nor before the Islamabad High Court, which issued the decree initially in favour of Faisal Sakhi Butt and subsequently in favour of Park Lane Estates (Pvt) Ltd.
In another mysterious twist Nasir Khan’s counsel, who had appeared on his behalf in the courts, also never met his ‘client’ nor does he remember to have ever spoken to him either before the initiation of the case, during its proceedings or after its conclusion.
Senior advocate of Supreme Court, Bashir Kiyani, represented Muhammad Nasir Khan in the courts. When approached by The News, Bashir Kiyani said that he neither knew nor ever met Muhammad Nasir Khan. “Some of my colleagues, whose name I will not mention, referred this case to me and gave a Wakalat Nama of Muhammad Nasir Khan,” Kiyani revealed, adding, “I don’t remember if I have ever spoken to him.”
When Kiyani was asked that in the court documents his (Kiyani’s) address was given as “service address” of Muhammad Nasir Khan so he should disclose who had given him Wakalat Nama of Nasir Khan, Kiyani replied that he would not disclose the identity of that person.
There was no mention in the court papers of the National Identity Card number (NIC), National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis number (NICOP), Pakistan Origin Card number (POC) or any of the US Social Security Number or identity number of Mr Khan.
Bashir Kiyani, however, said: “You can write it as my legal opinion that none of these identifications are required for transfer of land from one person to another person.”
In these situations where all the facts are contradictory, full of doubts and questionable, Faisal Sakhi Butt is the key missing link and he has shut himself up, not making himself available to the media.
Despite repeated requests made to him through his personal secretary, Mr Butt is not available for his views. Not only that, in the past repeated efforts were made to get his comments and he was again contacted after The News’ interaction with Nasir Khan but to no avail.
In 1997-98, the then Sharif government had alleged that the same land belonged to Mr Zardari, who had forcibly bought it from the locals during Benazir Bhutto’s second tenure but had transferred it in the name of what was said to be his front man, Nasir Khan.
In 1997 the Ehtesab Bureau headed by Mian Saifur Rehman had initiated a case against Mr Zardari while the FIA had arrested some persons in the case. Media reports in 1997 had then stated that Zardari had forcibly acquired 2,500 kanals of land, uprooting 300 families, to set up a polo ground and a riding pavilion in Sangjani, 25 minutes from main Islamabad. Now Mohammad Nasir Khan has confirmed that the reference filed by Mian Saifur Rehman was genuine.

It might be tempting to get rid of Mr Zardari as president, but it would be more appropriate to ask him to right the wrongs done by Musharraf. That includes the infamous 17th Amendment. Though Nawaz Sharif has been calling for the repeal of the controversial amendment it would take a lot of pressure and cajoling on the part of some key players to convince Mr Zardari to restore the honour of parliament. It would also be in the fitness of things to remove the two-time limit on premiership. Other reforms such as giving teeth to the Federal Public Service Commission and reining in security agencies can come later.
In order to achieve these aims Mr Zardari is the best person to occupy the august house on Constitutional Avenue. His supposed lack of credibility and high unpopularity render him open to attacks by the forces opposed to him. That gives more leeway to these forces which want to make him a figurehead. If the restoration of the pre-March 9, 2007 judiciary and the failure of the government to table the NRO in parliament are any guides, getting Mr Zardari to do the needful would be easier than forcing a more popular leader to repeal the controversial parts of the constitution.
Nothing Mr Zardari or his minions do should shock the nation anymore because we have all come to expect the worse from them. At their recent rally in Karachi, they claimed that the Quaid-e-Azam too used the Sindh card by getting the Pakistan Resolution passed by the Sindh Assembly. The fact is that the Quaid-e-Azam did not use the Sindh card. He used the Muslim card and he used it in the movement for national liberation. The present rulers want to use the Sindh card for their own personal agenda, without any benefit accruing to Sindh. No legitimate parallel can be drawn between the two situations, much less between the two leaders. After all, the present-day rulers used the Benazir Bhutto murder card to get into power, but what have they done to apprehend and punish her killers?
It is high time they stopped using various ‘cards’ solely for the sake of preserving their pointless hold on power, from which the nation benefited not one iota, and either started giving the people real relief from their backbreaking burdens or made room for someone else who could make an honest effort in that direction.
“We will use these twelve million dollars ob-tained from Benazir Bhutto & Asif Ali Zardari on the rehabilitation of rain victims”, bellowed Sheikh Rashid Ahmed while talking to the media.
Almost a year has passed since. The rain victims are still shelterless because there are no millions of dollars to be recovered & because hollow claims based on mala fide intentions do not deliver.
The military junta ruling the 150 million Pakistanis for almost six years runs on the crutches of conspiracy, blackmail, injustice, threats & torture. From Chaudhrys of Gujrat to Faisal Saleh Hayat of Jhung and from Aftab Sherpao of Peshawar to Arbab Ghulam Rahim of Thar or whosoever is in the government are there because of these arm-twisting tactics by the army and its intelligence agencies.
Genuine leadership representing the majority of population as well as the vote cast in the last election inspite of massive rigging, remain in exile because they refuse to bow before the tactics of threat & blackmail employed by the dictatorship ruling the garrison state. The present rulers have at least partly succeeded in following the principle of Nazi Propaganda Minister Goebbels: “If tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”
The media trial of politicians in general and of Benazir Bhutto and her spouse in particular has been carried out so vociferously that at least part of the population in the country and abroad started believing it without knowing facts about these politically motivated and thoroughly fabricated cases.
Take the case of Asif Zardari. He was kept in jail and that too in solitary confinement for eight consecutive years (and nearly twelve in two stints) till he walked out without the blemish of even a single conviction.
The interesting part is when he entered the jail in 1996, he was charged with eight cases but when he was released there were 22 cases against him.
Coming to the so-called Swiss case, it may come as news to many that the detailed work on the SGS-Cotecna award was done during the Nawaz Sharif Government preceding BB’s second tenure as PM. The essence of the matter was to check the per-shipment fraud and irregularities, which hit the vested interests of many in the bureaucracy as well as in business and industry.
It is the same case in which the judges of the High Court announced conviction of the accused. However when appeal was filed in the Supreme Court, the defence produced recorded tape in which a highly placed government functionary was dictating the verdict as well as the sentences to the judges. The Supreme Court not only set aside the judgement and ordered re-trial but admonished the judges in the severest of terms writing that ” the trial has been conducted in such a way that bias is seen floating over this case”.
The concerned judges of the High Court had to resign. Taxpayers have a right to ask the Generals governing Pakistan as to why billions have been spent so far to recover the allegedly stolen 15 million dollars when the government could not summon either the courage or the evidence, or may be both, to pursue the same case for re-trial in the country as ordered by the Supreme Court.
These billions have been spent on the innumerable journeys to Switzerland, UK and the USA by the Chairman NAB and his cronies, to lodge them in five-star hotels, to dish out lavishly on their TA/DA etc in addition to recruitment of hordes of attorneys especially for witch-hunting in this case whose salaries run in six figures for each of these super duper lawyers.
Another perception created by people in Islamabad is as if the Government of Switzerland has on its own discovered the case and registered it and it has gone for trial. Both are lies white as snow and dark as the intentions behind them. The Swiss are investigating the matter through a Magistrate whereas the investigation itself was triggered by false allegations made by Islamabad in a letter of request to Switzerland.
TOn the last working day in his office, Mr Daniel Devaud wrote adverse findings against the defendants. When an appeal was lodged against these findings, the same was quashed.
A new inquiry is now in progress on the insistence of the Government of Pakistan.
One does not have to qualify from Lincoln’s Inn to find out as to how Benazir Bhutto can be awarded five years imprisonment, as claimed by the Pakistani sleuths, when the case is still being investigated after the passage of so many years.
One significant point to note is that when the government suspended the functioning of SGS-Cotecna, the firm claimed damages, as there was nothing wrong or dubious in the contract. The government not only paid the entire amount of damages, it re-employed SGS-Cotecna because of their good services.
So, while the firm still works for the government, the same government runs to Switzerland crying as to why the contract was awarded to this firm by PPP government. In case you are getting confused, remember that it is a military government answerable to no one least of all to the parliament or the people. The publicity filth that BB took out $150,000/- allegedly from her company Bomer Finance in Switzerland to purchase a necklace worth $195,000/- from David Morris, a leading jeweller of London, gets cleared when one comes to know that BB neither holds an account in Switzerland nor owns a company in that country.
The next salvo coming from the government of the commando General belonging to the artillery arm of Pak army is that the lawyer handling the account of BB in Switzerland has been sent to jail. The fact is that there being no account of BB in Switzerland, no one was handling it & none has been sent to jail.
Yet another issue is the timings of the so-called Swiss case being thrown up in the media every now and then. The findings of Devaud investigations were made public when Musharraf became completely helpless in the turbulent year 2003 of Pakistan politics as the combined opposition successfully paralysed the parliament by opposing the 17th amendment to the constitution tooth and nail. The amendment was crucial for the survival of the Musharraf government.
While PPP stood its ground, Swiss case or no Swiss case, the Moulanas of MMA gave in to hold on to power in the two smaller provinces. If this had not happened, no one would be hearing the nonsensical reverberations
of this case today.
In 2004, when Musharraf went back on his promise to doff his uniform, made to the Madressa educated Moulanas in order to get the 17th amendment passed as an act of parliament, BB was approached to support this decision of Chief of the Army Staff. She would have nothing of this nonsense. Lo & behold! There was an uproar of the Swiss case in the media, the non-accountable General Muneer Hafeez rushed to Switzerland to be lodged in yet another palatial and he stayed there waiting the PPP Chairperson to get a summon to appear before the Swiss inquiry. She calmly went to Geneva, explained her position for more than two hours & walked out with her head held high, as her Shaheed father would have liked her to do.
Time & tide wait for no one. Musharraf can put a stop to the process of democracy, rule of law & visibility of justice but cannot do anything to stop the tickling of the clock on the wall, the wall the writing on which he cannot read.
The year 2005 brings the local bodies elections, year 2006 marks elections in the Muslim League of the Khakis and 2007 terminates General Musharraf’s Presidency. When he looks beyond 2007, buddies Bush & Blair are themselves approaching their final terms. (Since they do not wear uniform, they cannot go on forever.
Each of these milestones causes the rank and file of his fascist party closer to devour each other in their lust for good money & bad governance. Time to throw the balloon of the Swiss case up in the air again!
The sequence of events fit smugly in the good old saying “once is coincidence, twice is intention & thrice is conspiracy.” If Benazir agrees today to remain out of the country & politics for infinity, supports the 17th amendment as well as Musharraf to remain President beyond year 2007 with uniform or without, the Swiss case would go to the archives of the agencies. The intelligence agencies of Pakistan function on the premise that “truth does not matter. Only perceptions matter.”
They might have succeeded in distorting the perceptions of a few in the country or abroad but what they are doing is opposite to the teachings of the Holy Quran and sayings of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). That’s why truth is prevailing at the cost of falsely created perceptions & will go on to prevail finally. Insha Allah!

I have been in receipt of this extensive list of Asif Zardari’s Local and International holdings sent to me via a number of sources, in all honesty I have no way of precisely confirming the authenticity of this list but place it on this blog in an attempt to figure out what true what is simply hype. There is little doubt in my mind that this list may be quite close to being authentic considering the massive corruption that has plagued Pakistan in his previous two tenures in power, little to know that the Metamorphosis of 2008 which changed the way he appeared orchestrated after the assassination of his wife on 27th December 2007. Are we to believe in a ‘rejuvenated, honest by-the-books leader’, or are we gearing up to push Zardari further up into Pakistans Rich List of 2008 where he was previously ranked at #2.
I can also suspect that the sudden revelation if this list could be a deliberate retaliation by the ‘agencies’ to push Zardari on the back foot and move off Musharraf’s impeachment attack. Whatever be the case this massive list is jaw dropping amazing, I have no idea about the total valuation of the wealth itemized here but I suspect it could easily be an aggregated wealth as listed = £900m / ($1.8billion) or more

The Government even had the audacity to give a statement that the President along with his gang of crooks and cronies were going to the Marriott for Iftar. But everyone knows that if the President is going somewhere for Iftar, there would have been security guards combing every inch of the premises for over 24 hours before his arrival, but THERE WERE NONE!!! And they were enjoying themselves over a black label just a few hundred yards away from the Marriott and did not even blink an eye when they heard the blast. I always wonder that why Pakistan does not utilizes 18 billion people and produce various items which can later be sold in international market such as Airplanes, Fast Trains, Weapon technology and various other items. Leaders of Pakistan have pledged to neglect this nation and they are extremely busy filling their own pockets with stolen poor people’s money. I pray to God that the injustice vanishes soon and we see a real and authentic leader who can lead us through prosperity and happiness. I believe the leaders of Pakistan have failed to look after their country and they have failed to show care. We as a nation should unite together and raise against the ignorance we face today.
