Most people can spot the classic symptoms of a heart attack: chest pain, shortness of breath, and radiating pain in the neck, back, jaw and arms. But there may be a gender divide. While symptoms can vary greatly by person, studies show that men are more likely to exhibit classic signs. Women often experience symptoms not typically associated with heart attacks, which can appear weeks before the actual event, known to doctors as an acute myocardial infarction.

Some researchers point out that until the 1980s, heart disease was considered a male problem. As a result, many studies focused only on men and drew a narrow picture of the hallmark signs.

But in a study financed by the National Institutes of Health, scientists focused on female heart patients, 515 of them. They found that in the weeks before their attacks, 70 percent reported severe, unexplained fatigue, 48 percent reported sleep disturbances, and slightly fewer than half had shortness of breath, indigestion and anxiety. During the attack, more than 50 percent had shortness of breath and weakness, and slightly fewer than half experienced extreme fatigue, a profuse cold sweat and dizziness. Other studies have had similar findings. The American Heart Association says chest pain is still the most common warning sign in both sexes; and while men can experience “atypical” symptoms as well, women should be particularly aware of them.

An alleged terrorist plot to disrupt the G20 summit in London has been uncovered after police found a cache of imitation firearms, knives and a number of “suspicious devices.”

Police said they had discovered an amount of political material that is thought to relate to anti-capitalist protests planned to disrupt the meeting of world leaders this week.

Five people, all of whom live in Plymouth, Devon and the surrounding area, have been arrested under the Terrorism Act and are being held at a police station in Cornwall.

A police spokesman said there was no suggestion of Islamic extremists being involved and added: “Those arrested are not believed, at this stage, to be part of a national or larger operation.”

Officers found a range of imitation and deactivated firearms from handguns to long barrelled rifles and a Kalashnikov-style assault rifle, police said.

They also found “suspicious devices,” described as “improvised explosives made of fireworks,” that were seized and submitted for forensic examination.

The discoveries followed a number of raids in Plymouth after a 25-year-old man was caught spraying graffiti slogans in the city centre on Friday night.

Police searched the man’s address and found three other people, a 16-year-old youth and two women aged 20, at the premises who were arrested for drugs offences following the search.

“As the search progressed officers found a number of weapons and suspected imitation weapons as well material relating to political ideology,” a spokesman said.

Another, 19-year-old man was arrested on Sunday following further inquiries and police searched a number of other addresses.

One of those arrested was said to be an international student and the other four are British nationals. Police were granted more time to question them on Monday afternoon.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Netherton of Devon and Cornwall Police said the suspicious devices were “made of simple fireworks” but were probably not lethal.

He added: “Obviously people are going to make a connection to the G20 and we are looking into that as part of our investigation.

“Use of the Terrorism Act is a serious step and not taken lightly. But the items we found justified its use.”

The Metropolitan Police said it was liaising with the Devon and Cornwall force and added: “At the current time we have no information to suggest a change to the threat picture facing either the demonstrations or G20.

“We have said that we are seeing an unprecedented level of activity among protest groups not seen since the late 1990s, involving some individuals we have not seen on the protest circuit for some time.”

A spokesman added: “We would stress that the investigation is at a very early stage and that speculation regarding the capability, intention or motivation of those arrested is unhelpful.”

Devon and Cornwall Police’s Gold Commander Assistant Chief Constable Sharon Taylor said: “I would reassure local people and residents of Devon, Cornwall, that they are not at any risk and these arrests would appear to be isolated at this time.

The G20 summit, to be held at the ExCeL arena in London’s Docklands on Thursday, has been described by Scotland Yard as the capital’s most challenging police operation in a decade.

More than 3,000 police officers will be on duty when the leaders of the world’s 20 richest countries, including President Obama, descend on London, with up to 100,000 protesters expected to stage rallies and marches during the week.

Police fear the rallies will be hijacked by anarchists intent on sparking violence and riots, with thousands of hardline protesters expected to fly in from abroad.

A new Web site aimed at curbing Holocaust denial will include a history of Muslim-Jewish relations in English, French, Arabic and Farsi, the project’s organizers said before the project’s launch on Friday by prominent figures from Europe and the Muslim world. The initiative, called Project Aladdin, hinges on the Internet site, which is also to carry a history of the Holocaust and offer online Arabic and Farsi translations of books including “Anne Frank’s Diary,” the organizers said.

Among those unveiling the project include Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade, former French President Jacques Chirac and Abdurrahman Wahid, former president of Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation.

Auschwitz survivor Simone Veil, one of France’s most influential woman politicians, will also speak at the event.

Concerns about Holocaust denial captured headlines earlier this year when the Vatican lifted the excommunication of a Holocaust-denying bishop.

Holocaust-denying comments by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have also sparked worldwide outrage in recent years.

Former S President Bill Clinton hailed Project Aladdin, which he said in a letter “has the potential to play a vital role in countering denial with facts and putting a human face on something that otherwise might seem too terrible to believe.”

The initiative, which was to be launched at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters, is partially sponsored by France’s Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah.

Organizers said that more than 200 people, many prominent public figures from across the Muslim world, had joined the project’s so-called “conscience committee.” Jordan’s Prince El Hassan Ben Talal and former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder are among the project’s sponsors, organizers said in a statement ahead of the launch.

A 93-year-old Japanese man has become the first person to be officially recognised as a survivor of both atomic bombs dropped on Japan by the United States at the end of the Second World War.Tsutomu Yamaguchi had already been a certified hibakusha, or radiation survivor, of the Aug 9, 1945, atomic bombing in Nagasaki. But officials have now confirmed that he also survived the attack on Hiroshima three days earlier.

Mr Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on a business trip on Aug 6, 1945, when a US B-29 dropped an atomic bomb on the city. He then returned to his home in Nagasaki just in time for the second attack, officials said.

“As far as we know, he is the first one to be officially recognised as a survivor of atomic bombings in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” said Toshiro Miyamoto, a Nagasaki city official. “It’s such an unfortunate case, but it is possible that there are more people like him.”

Certification qualifies survivors for government compensation – including monthly allowances, free medical checkups and funeral costs – but Mr Yamaguchi’s compensation will not increase, Mr Miyamoto said.

Mr Yamaguchi is one of about 260,000 people who survived the attacks, which killed 140,000 in Hiroshima and 70,000 in Nagasaki.

Survivors of the bombs have developed various illnesses from radiation exposure, including cancer and liver illnesses.

Details of Mr Yamaguchi’s health problems were not released.

Thousands of survivors continue to seek official recognition after the government rejected their eligibility for compensation.

The government last year eased the requirements for being certified as a survivor, following criticism the rules were too strict and neglected many who had developed illnesses that doctors have linked to radiation.
